AUTOMATED HANDLING & PACKAGING OF PREFILLED SYRINGES

The present case study shows a fully integrated automated handling system, including the FlexyBot IFlexyBot IIand FlexyBot III solutions for prefilled syringes.

Our customer, an international pharmaceutical company was carrying out an expansion of their PreFilled Syringes (PFS) production capacity. Various requirements had to be taken into account here. Basically, this solution should stand separately, as it is used for different production lines. It is needed for unpacking syringes out of tubs and pallets and packing them into tubs and pallets afterwards again. In addition, it should be possible to handle syringes for feeding a packaging line with a single transport lane and to handle several sizes of syringes to an inspection line. It needed to be automated as much as possible from the depalletizing to the palletizing at the end of the process steps.

Seeking a solution that could adapt to space limitations, they approached STERISYS for a customized automation option that could be either automated or manual based on production needs. This solution was designed to address the logistical challenges associated with different machines, packaging, and processes while meeting the requirements of their existing automated warehouse.

STERISYS’ Solution involves a handling system combining 6 operational modes depending on the production specifications:

  • Taking the tubs out of the pallet (Depalletizing)
  • Taking the nest out of the tub
  • Taking the prefilled syringes out of the nest (Denesting)
  • Placing the prefilled syringes into the nest (Nesting)
  • Placing the nest into the tub
  • Placing the tubs into the pallet (Palletizing)

To provide the most flexible solution, we have developed a single gripper capable of picking and placing tub, lid and nest. This eliminates the need for time-consuming tool changes, saving valuable time and optimizing the efficiency of the packaging process. Additionally, we have integrated a dedicated conveyor system for prefilled syringes and nests, enabling both automated and manual modes of operation.
