EO STERILIZATION

Gas treatement system

Meet the requirements of the applicable standards through professional EO gas treatment

After sterilization with ethylene oxide (EO), gas may not be freely released into the atmosphere; therefore, a gas treatment unit needs to be interconnected. This allows you to professionally treat the generated amounts of EO in accordance with the requirements of the German TA-Luft guideline (EO <= 0.5 mg/m3).

STERISYS offers different gas treatment units depending on the dimension of the system and the sterilization process:

  • Electrical- or gas-operated catalyst, if necessary combined with a peak shaver (water buffer tank);
  • scrubber system;
  • gas combustion unit.

Together with you, we determine which gas treatment unit suits your system.

EXAMPLE FOR A PROCESS OF A PEAK SHAVER WITH CATALYST

1. At first, the highly concentrated EO exhaust air from the sterilizer is transported to the peak shaver and stored there in combination with water.

2. The EO enriched water is pumped into the so-called stripping column (EO water/air separation column). This column contains so-called Rashid elements, and the EO is extracted from water through the reciprocal circulation of air and water and absorbed by the air.

3. The EO contaminated air flow from the stripping column is continuously transported to the catalyst. Here, the EO is neutralized under a chemical process and transported outside through a chimney.

4. The exhaust air from the catalyst corresponds to the requirements of the applicable environmental regulations.

An EO gas treatment system is a technical subsystem of an ethylene oxide sterilization system that treats exhaust air containing EO before it is released. Depending on the process, ethylene oxide is retained or chemically converted. Catalytic oxidation produces carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O). The system supports compliance with applicable environmental and safety requirements and is an integral part of the EO sterilization system.

Ethylene oxide (EO) is toxic and classified as carcinogenic, Category 1B, under the EU CLP Regulation. Exhaust air from sterilization processes contains EO concentrations that must not be released without treatment. Gas treatment systems reduce these concentrations to protect personnel and the environment and comply with statutory limits.

An EO gas treatment system collects exhaust air containing EO and directs it to an appropriate treatment process. Ethylene oxide is typically oxidized with oxygen in a catalytic oxidation system to form carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O). A peak shaver can be installed upstream to manage temporarily high EO concentrations. It absorbs EO in water and releases it to the catalytic treatment process over time. Filter systems may be used for very low concentrations, for example in the general ventilation system of a production area. The treated exhaust air is then discharged in a controlled manner.

Emission limits depend on regional regulations. In Germany, the Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control (TA Luft) specify a maximum EO concentration of 0.5 mg/m³ in exhaust air. Gas treatment systems are designed to meet or remain below these limits during operation.

A catalytic EO gas treatment system, also referred to as a catalytic oxidation system, converts ethylene oxide into carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O) using a catalyst at controlled temperatures. The catalyst allows oxidation to take place at lower temperatures. This supports energy-efficient operation.

Filter systems are used for very low EO concentrations, for example in the general ventilation system of a production area. They retain ethylene oxide or convert it into other reaction products. For the temporarily higher EO concentrations generated by a sterilization process, catalytic oxidation systems with an upstream peak shaver are generally used.

A scrubber system removes ethylene oxide from exhaust air by transferring the gas into a liquid, usually water. EO is washed out of the gas phase and dissolved in the water. Depending on the design, an additional chemical conversion may occur, for example to ethylene glycol. Scrubber systems are often combined with other processes because EO usually requires further treatment after absorption.

A peak shaver is a buffer system that absorbs ethylene oxide (EO) from exhaust air into water. The EO is not broken down but temporarily stored and subsequently released to a downstream treatment system over time. This balances concentration peaks and protects the catalytic oxidation system from overloading.

A stripping column separates ethylene oxide from water by transferring it back into the gas phase. Water and air flow counter currently over structured Raschig elements. The resulting gas stream containing EO is then treated in a downstream stage, for example by catalytic oxidation.
